What are First Person Games and MMO Games?

First Person Video Games Give You The Perspective Of the Character You're Playing. (You see through his eyes)

If you’re not a gaming enthusiast (yet), or are simply trying to understand the video game landscape a bit, you have probably run into the terms “MMO Games” and “First Person Games” or “First Person Shooter Games“.

I, too, have had the questions:

What are First Person Video Games?

What are MMO Games?

Here is the answer!

I’ll give you a quick answer first:

1) What is a First Person Video Game?

A First Person game is a video game where you (the player) view the game from the point of view of the character you’re playing.  Essentially, you are looking through his eyes.  (This type of gaming experience is really fun, but makes some people — like my grandmother — nautious.)

A slight different gaming experience is called a “Third Person” view, where you participate in the game looking at your character, and the surroundings.  It’s really similar to a first person gaming experience, but it is pretty cool to see your character while he’s in the middle of all the action.  And, my grandmother finds the third person view a bit easier to handle!

2) What is a MMO Video Game?

A MMO Video Game is an acronym for “Massive Multiplayer Online” game.  Basically, all this means is that you can play with a ton of other people simultaneously, online.  Some of the more popular recent MMO video games are Modern Warfare, Call of Duty, etc.

Sometimes you play video games without any online interaction with other players.  For instance, Skyrim is a game you cannot play with others online.  It’s a crazy-awesome world that you explore and play on your own.  However, there is something really awesome about being able to explore games and play along with others online.

I love MMO Video Games because I can connect with my friends and play with them, without leaving the comfort of my own couch!

NOTE:  As a kid, you need to be aware that in MMO games you can hear some really vulgar language from other players.  But, it’s not that big of a deal, if you are prepared and can just tune them out.

WikiPedia has more thorough answers for each of these.

What is a First Person Shooter Video Game.

Answer (Source:  Wikipedia)

First-person shooter (FPS) is a video game genre that centers the gameplay on gun and projectile weapon-based combat through first-person perspective; i.e., the player experiences the action through the eyes of a protagonist. Generally speaking, the first-person shooter shares common traits with other shooter games, which in turn fall under the heading action game. From the genre’s inception, advanced 3D or pseudo-3D graphics elements have challenged hardware development, and multiplayer gaming has been integral.

The first-person shooter has since been traced as far back as Maze War, development of which began in 1973, and 1974’s Spasim. 1987’s MIDI Maze for the Atari ST was one of the first network multiplayer action games and also saw release on game consoles. The genre coalesced with 1992’s Wolfenstein 3D, which is generally credited with creating the genre proper and the basic archetype upon which subsequent titles were based. One such title, and the progenitor of the genre’s wider mainstream acceptance and popularity was Doom, released the following year and perhaps the most influential first-person shooter. Half-Life, released in 1998, enhanced the narrative and puzzle elements, and along with its 2004 sequel Half-Life 2, showcases the considerable development of the genre’s potential.[1][2] GoldenEye 007 (1997) was a first landmark first-person shooter for home consoles, with the Halo series heightening the console’s commercial and critical appeal as a platform for first-person shooter titles. Metroid Prime (2002) further expanded the genre’s potential by popularizing action-adventure elements in the genre.[3] In the 21st century, the first-person shooter is one of the most commercially viable and fastest growing video game genres.

What is a MMO Game?

Answer (Source:  Wikiepedia)

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and usually feature at least one persistent world. They are, however, not necessarily games played on personal computers. Most of the newer game consoles, including the PSP, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Wii can access the Internet and may therefore run MMO games. Additionally, mobile devices and smartphones based on such operating systems as Android, iOS and Windows Phone are seeing an increase in the number of MMO games available.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.

How to find the Amulet of Arkay in Skyrim

How do I find Andur’s Amulet of Arkay in Skyrim?

This quest has boggled me for a couple of hours.  I thought it would be really easy, so I took the quest.

This is a miscellaneous quest in Skryim Elder Scrolls.  And again – it looks easy.

The goal:  Recover Andur’s Amulet of Arkay in Whiterun Catacombs.

That’s it.  Just recover the amulet of arkay, and return it to Andur.

But – when you get into the catacombs, it’s quite hard to find!  (It’s not sticking out anywhere; it’s not obvious.)  I passed it up a hundred times.

So, if you’re on this quest, and trying to recover Andur’s Amulet of Arkay and you want to know “How do I find the Amulet of Arkay?” – just watch this video to help!

Skryim – an impressive introduction (3 videos)

The Ellder Scrolls V:  Skryim

Direct from The producers of Skyrim, Bethesda Game Studios, these videos are a great demonstration and overview of the game.

Since Skyrim is such a huge game, with a gigantic map, the video can’t show you everything.  But you’ll get one heck of a great sense of how awesome this game looks.

In this video, he discusses all the factors that they took into account when creating this impressive video game.  You learn how they redesigned everything to make this game bigger and better than their previous games of Elder Scrolls.

Got time?  Watch My Other Videos of Skyrim GamePlay.

In my earlier post, I compiled a playlist of over 30 videos of a video game expert playing Skryim, called “Let’s Play Skryim“.  There are over 30+ hours of video game play in those videos.

Or, Spend your time wisely with these videos.

The 3 videos below provides a much more time-efficient experience.  So, if you want to see what Skryim is, how it’s played, and see what it looks like (without having to buy it first) – watch these videos.

Their big motto for Skryim is “you are who you play”.

This video is presented by the game director, Todd Howard.  It’s a great introduction to Skryim and gives you a great overview of what this video game is all about, how it works and more.

I gotta say, the graphics presented in this video overview of skyrim are amazing.

You know how sometimes the video game trailer has a production value close to a motion picture?  And, you know the disappointment you experience when the video game itself plays nothing like the trailer?

Well – skyrim is not one of those games!

The graphics of this game are killer.  When you’re running through this enormous world, the people, the landscape, and all the details are beyond impressive.

Just watch this video and you’ll see what I man.

I don’t know how he finds the time, but I’m glad he did.

This guy is amazing.  He has a ton of videos of all types of video games, including a lot of good walk through’s of the games as he plays them.  (It includes helpful commentary as he’s making decisions and playing the game.)

If you want to learn how to play Skryim Ellder Srcolls from a guy who clearly knows his video games, then I suggest you check out his videos.

The cool thing about this is that as you watch his game progress, you actually learn that he’s making decisions and answering questions from viewers!

Checking out Skyrim (Elder Scrolls)

Skryim looks like one killer game.

Watching the commercials and trailers for it shows that it’s one very well produced game.

I just rented it to see if I’d like it.

So far – it seems like a massive departure from the simple “just go out and shoot guys” type of games like Modern Warfare and Call of Duty.

Also, it’s not your goofy Mario Brothers, mindless game.

This appears to be a game very-much based on a story that I feel like I should have understood well before starting the game.

A few freinds and I have spent a couple hours playing Skryim and I don’t have a full review yet.

I can, however say that:

  • It looks freakin’ amazing!  The graphics are killer.
  • The story is sweet.  I need to plan to spend more time with this game.
  • It appears to be a game that you need to spend plenty of time with, enjoying the story and the options while unlocking the secrets of the game during the process.

I can also say that I haven’t had enough experience to give a full review or recommendation.  At least not yet.

So, I must continue my tedious research.  (It’s a tough life, but someone’s gotta do it!)

Finding expertise in others.

When I’m new to a game (or anything for that matter) and I need to do a little research, I recognize that other people have forged a path before me.  Others have been where I’m going; I can learn from them to make my time more efficient.

I found a good youtube video from a guy who has a ton (and I mean a ton!) of really good videos of himself playing games.  Check it out here.

So, for now, I’m going to play skyrim in my spare time and will report back.

Skyrim a complete video introduction before you buy

During my review of Skryim The Elder Scrolls I realized that I need to learn a bit more about this game from someone who has a bit more experience with this whole “story”.

As I mention in my “initial review / non review of Skyrim”, I don’t have a ton of experience playing these types of story-based games.  I’m more accustom to simple, straight up shoot & kill games like Call of Duty or Modern Warfare, or stupid, mindless games like Mario Brothers.  (Over simplification, of course.  But you should get my point.)

Since I have walked into this game with no prior experience, understanding or research of any sort — I started playing this game “blind”.

I feel like I could use some background and a perspective from a gamer who understands this game genre better than me.

So, I have turned to youtube!

Below, I have shared the video that I’m watching to get some background before I continue playing.
